A Little Short of a Perfect World

A dedication to Wayne Moy
A devoted friend, an ambitious husband and a loving father.
I wish this was the kind of world you could have been in with me.

Imagine this. A place where crime and poverty do not exist. A place full of technology but still preserving the nature and the lush green paradise that embraces us each day. A society where family values apply to everyone, and everyone is your family. A place where disease no longer plagues us and instead, love infects us all rapidly. A place where human greed can be used for good. A place where the excitement of the city and the comfort of the suburbs meet and happiness runs rampant. A place where there is no need for oppressive autocratic laws to hold you down, but a code of honor and trust that we all unwillingly follow. A place where the weak are helped out of sincerity rather than pity. A place where you appreciate the things you have. A place where you’re love can’t be diminished. A place where revolution will never touch. A place for you and me.

History is home to hundreds of failed attempts to create the “perfect society”. Hitler’s attempt at an Aryan world crash and burned. Mussolini’s fascist party boasted of the power of the state and today Italy will only see the death of “Il Duce” as the downfall of an evil man. The Spanish, Portuguese and Britons attempts to control foreign people despite the resentment, would only lead to the fall of each maritime power as time progressed. Capitalism has enhanced human greed and indifference toward those we don’t know. Communism has taken away the creative side of life and puts us down for the values we desire and in fact takes away preexisting values. So many ideas that have been proposed to create a “nicer” world and yet each one tends to have a tragic flaw. As humans we keep trying to improve. We keep trying to be happy.

People who want and don’t want guns all fear the cruel reality that we live in. What if we could eliminate that fear? What if you could walk outside your front door to anywhere around your community, anywhere across the country, anywhere in the world without fear. Guns are gone because no one needs them. No one uses them because no one wants to.
Each individual mind can perceive the environment around them so differently. It’s for this reason that we are so creative and diverse. But what if we could all adopt a new social policy willingly, whether it be over the course of one year or struggle across decades? What if we could all develop a personal duty to preserve not only ourselves, but the people we are surrounded by? A natural feeling of guilt or honor code engraved into our body when we do what we know is wrong. A stronger awareness of our actions. Western civilization has failed to coax us into being better people. Communist regimes have succeeded in creating economic equality but as a result take away our humanity. But we will always keep hope in that we can create a better society for the future.

I walk outside my door and my neighbor greets me as I walk past his doorstep. The kids are playing with one another in the fields and the people are smiling. A father plays with his son, a neighborhood boy teaches a younger boy to ride a bike for the first time. An urban community sees no crime or yells. Sirens do not go off and people smile there just as they do in the suburbs. We don’t walk past each other with suspicion in our eyes and our hands in our pockets. We let out a smile and take to a light conversation. We may not all be of the same intelligence but we can all love the same.

That young girl who got her heartbroken can worry less about her problems and help others with theirs. That widow may have lost a husband but because of the community she gained a family. That little girl who lost her father can grow up knowing the kind of love he would have wanted for her is in the community. These individuals can be so greatly affected by the little things we do. Reckless tumbling and turning in bed and the nightmares that terrorize some can be forgotten. The tears of nostalgic citizens can be wiped away by anyone. The word “ugly” wouldn’t dare be used by anyone. The powerful are humble and the weak are stronger. The sad who have fallen are picked up. The scarred are healed. And the loveless are loved.

The workforce is not working out of fear of being fired but to better themselves and the community. Everyone is supplied with the basics they need for life but can enhance that way of living with hard work. The temptation of cheating and fooling others is not felt by anyone because of a preexisting desire to do good and be fair. Many family values will disappear, only to be replaced with a bond to society. Families can still exist but the communities they exist in are closer. The mentally and physically disabled can be treated and as technology advances we try to aid the less fortunate, not out of pity, but for the betterment of their and our own lives.

Occasionally there will be an outburst of anger, outbreaks of discontent from someone but mentally they eventually understand why things happen. They come to a realization and correct themselves. There is no need for armed forces, severe discipline or mental rehabilitation. Religion is by choice so long as it does not interfere or force others against their will. The greed in humans ,that no one can eliminate, can be redirected to the advancement of technology and business. The time of depression and sorrow we feel can be eased with a group of people their for us. The media and its celebrities no longer give us unrealistic expectations and are instead looked upon as role models because we all realize they are just like us. Those people came from the same backgrounds as us and that we are all celebrities.

This is not a utopia. It will never be a perfect world. It’s because of these little or temporary problems that always exist but we can all hope. Hope for a harmonious living amongst our community. When the way of thinking has changed among all, the ways of civilization join it.

As unrealistic as this may sound, we could keep working toward this. Nothing is impossible, even an idea such as this. Even as the mightiest of empires and “utopias” fall, this will stand as a symbol of hope for humanity. Hope that we can all understand one another and not be held down by the stubborn confinements of our minds. This place can remain a sanctuary in the human mind for comfort and relief even in today’s world.

At the bottom of Pandora’s box there will always be hope and that hope is what will drive human efforts to love and be loved.
