A Perspective of the Boston Marathon Bombings

It has been a long week in the state of Massachusetts, after 5 long brutal days the dust has settled and justice has seemingly prevailed.  The actions of two people, and using the term people is a compliment for these cowards, caused four families to now be without a member.  The country was in a state of shock for the hours after the bombing itself, who would do this? Why? After three days things seemed to be back to normal though slightly on edge. But in the wee hours of friday morning they struck again.

The two cowards slayed MIT Police officer Sean Collier who bravely stood his ground and was killed in the line of duty.  Officer Collier was a great presence on the MIT campus according to numerous students and alumni. Many students alumni asked about Officer Collier all came forward telling about someone who was greatly involved with knowing the students on campus.  Officer Collier was 26 years old…Let that sink in 26 years old….

The chief of the campus police was quoted as saying “Sean was one of these great guys who really looked at police work as a calling” “ He was born to be a police officer”  The city then was put into a lockdown, people were told to stay in and only venture out if absolutely necessary.  After Officer Collier was killed the manhunt went into full effect, a multi jurisdictional task force composed of Federal, State, and city law  enforcement set up a very broad search area and swept through every nook and crevice within the area and came up empty.  All day friday things were uneasy after what happened that morning the whole city was a war zone.  But before the manhunt and shootout ensued.  The Police went after the suspects, but the suspects would not go quietly, throwing pipe bombs and hand grenades at the pursuing officers.

The older brother Tamerlan Tsarnev died in this shootout with police.  The United States had not experienced an incident like this in the longest time, this is the most advanced country in the world, we don’t have incidents like this frequently if at all.  The next day searching for Dzhokhar the younger of the two brothers.  He was narrowed down to a specific location after police heard gunshots from that area.  They had him pinned down to a boat in a backyard.  He was hidden under a tarp, he was picked up by an infrared camera on a helicopter according to the Daily News.  The police then swooped in anxious to end this nightmare and took him alive.  Now that we have him alive the lengthy interrogation process will begin and then a trial of some kind.

But the lasting impact of this event will be felt at home more than ever.  It’s moments like this although tragic that rally a country together.  When things go to hell the brave go charging in and the American flag gets waved with pride in support.  A horrible misconception is that Police are out to just ruin people’s day and write tickets.  But when the smokes in the air and order is needed they bravely march in and bring the order desperately needed.  A message I was brought up with can be spread and it’s quite simple, whenever you see a first responder of any kind just go up to them and say “Thank You” to have a job where you might not come home that day because you put someone else’s life before your own is a job that deserves the highest pay and highest respect possible.  Same thing for all those out there in any branch whether it be, Police, Fire, EMT or anything of the sort.
